RESUME.
The men arrive at the grave of
Hoss Williams and Potter and Joe begin digging. Dr. Robinson sits near a tree
and tells them to hurry up. They load the corpse into a wheelbarrow and tie it
up. Potter, knife in hand, tells Dr. Robinson that he owes him more money for
digging up the body. When Dr. Robinson objects to this, Injun Joe starts yelling
at him about revenge on him.

The doctor punches Injun Joe
and knocks him down. Potter pulls out the knife and pushes the doctor to the
ground. Injun Joe picks up the knife, and when Dr. Robinson hits Potter over
the head with a plank, Injun Joe stabs him in the chest. Dr. Robinson drops
dead before Potter's unconscious body. Tom and Huck run away in fear, as fast
as they can.

Injun Joe is unaware of his
presence. Instead, he robs Dr. Robinson's corpse and puts the knife in Muff
Potter's hand. When Potter wakes up, Injun Joe lies and tells him that the
doctor hit Potter in the head, and then Potter stabbed him in a daze. Potter
begs him not to tell anyone, and then runs away, leaving the bloody knife
behind. Injun Joe, knowing that the knife would be found and that Muff Potter
would be blamed, leaves the churchyard.
